Having Children at Your Wedding Reception

Kids are one of those "hot topics" for brides. Some don't mind if there are children present, some are adamently against it, and some are torn between what they want and what the family wants. Hopefully, I can give you some solutions if you are the bride torn between wanting a "No Children Reception" and "Children Welcome Reception."

1. Keep Your Menu "Kid-Friendly."  This doesn't mean that you are restricted to chicken fingers and french fries. It just means that you may want to stay away from messy foods or limit sauces (gravy, BBQ sauce, au jus, etc.) to the adult entrees. You could even have the children served a different meal all together! Some caterers will do children's plates even if you're having a buffet for the adult crowd. This could cut down on costs for you and messes for the parents of the child.

2. Nix the Chocolate Fountain.  Chocolate fountains are deliciously messy for all age groups. To avoid the potential chocolate-meets-wedding-dress scenario, save the fountain for a kid-free occasion. If you have to have chocolate, think about a Candy or S'mores Buffet! It's fun for all ages!

3. Make Your Reception a "Yes" Environment.  Instead of focusing on what you DON'T want the children to do, give them things they CAN do. Children, especially younger ones, are easy to entertain but need activities. Sitting still is just not characteristic of a young child. A dance floor, some bubbles, a Photo Booth, or an Activity Table with board games/coloring book/crayons, etc. can all keep them busy.

4. Hire a Sitter. This could be a single family member, several people who rotate throughout the night, or someone from Care.com. Either way, having someone who is responsible and will keep an eye on the children will not only help you out, but also their parents. Parents want to enjoy themselves too!

5. Relax! Take things in stride. While horror stories are rooted in truth, they are the exception, not the rule. Enjoy every minute of your Wedding Day! It goes by fast.
